I started work with Grant MacEwan nearly 4 years ago.
I moved to the South Campus with Institutional Research & Planning (formerly Strategic Planning) 3 years ago this July.
MacEwan became a university nearly 2 years ago.
So why is this a new job?
Because as of November, I became the department's Research Coordinator.
I was tempted to not apply, to stay where I was comfortable as the department's administrative assistant. It was familiar. It was known.
Fortunately I have some staff you really believe in me, even when I refuse to do so myself. And they listen to me. So with some revision of the position I decided to throw my hat into the ring.
Getting short-listed for interviews wasn't a surprise to me. But you could have knocked me over with a feather when I learned I got it. I got it! With more than 80 applicants and the top 5 applicants being interviewed, I forced myself not to believe that I didn't have a clear shot at the job so I didn't blow the interview by being too complacent. It worked, but then I had to convince myself that I was being promoted.
Now the hard part begins, earning it.
I have been in the position since November, juggling covering my old position and doing the new one, hiring a new administrative assistant (who is fabulous, by the way), training her, learning my new job and meeting the deadlines that are cropping up. You'd think that was enough, but I'm also looking at the job as I'm learning it and the little glimmer of how to improve it/make it more functional is starting to take shape in my brain.
It's exciting, overwhelming and wonderful. Wish me luck!
